Oberlin Launches New Study Abroad Program: Experience the Magic of Paris Starting Fall 2025
Oberlin College is expanding its global learning opportunities with the launch of Oberlin-in-Paris, a semester-long study abroad program debuting in fall 2025. Following the success of the long-standing Danenberg Oberlin-in-London Program, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, Oberlin-in-Paris aims to provide students with an immersive cultural and academic experience in one of the world’s most iconic cities.
Expanding Horizons Through Study Abroad
Each year, over 300 Oberlin students study away, but only a small fraction participate in Oberlin-sponsored programs. With the addition of Oberlin-in-Paris, the College is responding to growing interest from students and faculty for opportunities beyond London.
“Travel and study abroad are integral to broadening perspectives and addressing profound questions — a hallmark of an Oberlin education,” said Deanna Bergdorf, director of Winter Term and global learning.
Paris was a natural choice, thanks to the expertise and passion of Associate Professor of French and Cinema and Media Studies Grace An and Professor of Dance Ann Cooper Albright, who will co-lead the program.
A Unique Blend of Academics and Culture
Oberlin-in-Paris is designed to immerse students in the city’s rich history, culture, and arts through a thoughtfully curated curriculum and experiential learning opportunities.
Key academic offerings include:
- Poetry and Protest in the Streets: Paris 1968 (Professor Grace An)
- Writing from the Vanishing Point (Professor Ann Cooper Albright)
- Tasting France (Co-taught by Professors An and Albright)
- A tailored French language course at the Paris College of Art
Beyond the classroom, students will experience Paris firsthand with visits to landmarks like the Louvre Museum and Musée d’Orsay and excursions to the Loire Valley and Strasbourg.
Accessibility and Support
For students like second-year Max Julius, Oberlin-in-Paris is not just an academic opportunity but also a practical choice.
“The program offers a chance to engage with communities outside the U.S. while providing support from professors I trust and admire,” Julius shared.
The program’s home-tuition model ensures accessibility by allowing students to apply their existing financial aid packages. This approach removes many of the logistical and financial barriers often associated with third-party study abroad programs.
Building on Success
Oberlin-in-Paris is the latest in a series of successful initiatives by the College’s French department, which recently launched the Discovering Champagne: The World in a Glass summer block course and Winter Term projects in Bordeaux.
“It felt like the right time for Oberlin to create home-grown experiences befitting Oberlin students in Paris, a magical city where connections are built in its streets and cafés,” said Professor Albright.
Looking Ahead: Global Engagement
Oberlin’s commitment to fostering global engagement doesn’t stop at Paris. The College is already exploring future opportunities in cities like Berlin, Cairo, and Tokyo, with exploratory visits underway. These efforts align with Oberlin’s mission to create transformative educational experiences for students worldwide.
A New Chapter for Oberlin Students
With its blend of academics, cultural immersion, and affordability, Oberlin-in-Paris is set to be a transformative experience for students. For those eager to expand their horizons, engage with global communities, and explore the vibrant life of Paris, this program promises an unforgettable adventure.
Stay tuned for updates and get ready to say “Bonjour” to a world of possibilities in Paris!
