Important Update for Students Changing Schools in Canada
On November 15, 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced a major change in the process for students transferring schools at the post-secondary level.
đ Key Updates Effective November 8, 2024:
- New Study Permit Requirement: Students must now apply for a new study permit if they plan to change their Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
- The current study permit must list the name of the new institution.
- Students are generally not allowed to begin classes at the new institution until their updated study permit is approved.
- Processing times for study permits are approximately 15 weeks, so plan accordingly to avoid delays in your education journey.
â Who is NOT Affected?
- Students whose study permit already lists their new institution.
- Students who applied for a study permit with the Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from their intended institution before November 8, 2024.
- Those changing programs or levels of study within the same institution.
â Who is Impacted?
- Students transferring from one institution to another in Canada without an updated study permit.
- Students whose current study permit does not reflect their new DLI.
đ What Should You Do?
- If you havenât applied yet, ensure your study permit application includes the LOA from your new institution.
- If your permit is in process, upload the LOA using IRCCâs webform to avoid complications.
- If your permit is approved but outdated, reapply with the correct information before starting at your new institution.
This regulation aims to ensure compliance with immigration laws. Students are urged to stay informed and prepare in advance to avoid interruptions in their academic journey.
